Before getting started


Please read the Prerequisites before you start to install the software!

Install on Linux

  • Boot the server on which you want to install the thin client server software.
  • Open a root terminal or make yourself root user with "su" and the root password.
  • Check your java version with "java -version". In order to start the thin client server you need java 1.6 installed on your system.
java version "1.6.0_12"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_12-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.2-b01, mixed mode)


If you have verified your java installation you can now change to your download directory and execute the following command to start the installation.
java -jar openthinclient-0.4.5.jar

Now you should see the graphical installer on your screen which will guide you through the installation process.

First you have to choose your language (currently there is english and german avaliable)







Here you can select the directory for the installation






The recommended default setting is to install the openthinclient server as linux service
so that the server starts automatically at boot time.

If you have a proxy server in your network environment please check the
box for it. The "use proxy server" setting it is neccessary for updating the application and packages of your installation.





If you have choosen a proxy server you can set its parameters here.
(Notice: It is possible to change this setting manually in the configuration at a later date)







Congratulations! You should now have a running openThinClient server installation.

Install on Windows 7 64bit / Windows Server 2008r2 64bit


There are currently some issues with the installation under Windows 7 64ibt. Please see the
InstallationFAQ for more information.

Install on Windows (XP, 2003)



  • Boot your Windows Installation on the server on which you want to install the thin client server software.
  • Check your java version. In order to start the thin client server you need java 1.6 installed on your system.

The install process you see here looks basically same on every Windows Operation System.
We will use Windows XP for this sample installation.

If you have verified your java installation you can now doubleclick on the icon named:
openthinclient-0.4.5.jar

Now you should see the graphical installer on your screen which will guide you to the installation process.

You can change the default program group if you wish or create the group only for you.
